Microsoft 'patents human skin'
more from same ()
Microsoft has a patent on a new kind of network: Your body.
The software giant has received a U.S. patent for a "method and apparatus for transmitting power and data using the human body." An application for the patent, No. 6,754, 472, was filed in 2000 and awarded this week.

Microsoft proposes linking portable devices such as watches, keyboards, displays, and speakers using the conductivity of "a body of a living creature."

Powering Devices

A variety of devices could be powered selectively from a single power source carried on the body, via multiple power supply signals at different frequencies, according to the patent abstract. In addition, data and audio signals could be transmitted over that same power signal. The power source and devices would be connected to the body via electrodes.

In the patent application, Microsoft says the company set out to address the proliferation of small handheld or wearable devices with redundant parts for input and output of data, such as separate speakers in a watch, a radio, and a personal digital assistant. If all those devices were networked, they could all share one speaker, the company suggests. Personal wireless networks have potential problems involving power consumption, interference and security, and batteries add weight and are inconvenient to replace or recharge, according to Microsoft.

A Microsoft spokesperson on Wednesday confirmed the company has been awarded the patent. Microsoft did not immediately provide any details of product plans for the technology.

Practical Uses

The idea of using the body to transmit power among devices is not new, according to Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney. However, small batteries and wireless personal-area network technologies such as Bluetooth may be a more practical approach, he says.

"Think about the problems of always having to have things touching your body," Dulaney says. "I think this could be one of those technologies that's interesting but not practical in the long run."

One area in which the body could be useful as a network conduit might be useful is with medical devices, he adds.

Open Source: Inadequate Security Poses National Security Threat?
more from same ()
It really saddens me to think someone thinks this way.  over @ http://www.designnews.com/article/CA435615.html .  Dan O'Dowd, CEO of Green Hills Software, suggests that open source software has the capability of being sabotaged by foreign developers and should not be used for U.S. military or security purposes.

I hate to rant around about this, but, this dood has no clue what so ever.  Also this quote: "Even if Linux were as secure as Windows, Windows is the wrong benchmark. Defense systems should be held to a higher standard."  Linux is so far surpass windows on security its not even funny.  and : "Until Linux is certified to DO-178B Level A, our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines should not be asked to trust their lives with it."  Dood i would risk my life on linux, before i risk a toenail on windows.

Researchers warn of infectious Web sites
more from same ()
http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105_2-5247187.html?tag=zdfd.newsfeed

Security researchers warned Web surfers on Thursday to be on guard after uncovering evidence that widespread Web server compromises have turned corporate home pages into points of digital infection.

The researchers believe that online organized crime groups are breaking into Web servers and surreptitiously inserting code that takes advantage of two flaws in Internet Explorer that Microsoft has not yet fixed. Those flaws allow the Web server to install a program that takes control of the user's computer.

The extent of the attacks is unknown, but the security community has seen numerous cases of personal computers infected when the user merely visits a Web site.

Do you want your embedded system to run on Slackware ?
more from same ()
There is a tool that helps you build bootable Compact Flash systems.
The system is built from a stripped Slackware 9.1 (no documentation, man, info and other non essential stuff )
where only the base system and essential networking packages were installed (although you can replace the source filesystem tree from which the system is built with whatever you need ).
The source fs tree supplied is capable of saving changes on shutdown and reloading them next boot even in root is on an initial ramdisk, this allows you to install any other packages you need without loosing them when you shutdown (as long as you have enough space to save them on CF).

The tool can be downloaded from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bclash/

This is a sad day to be a slacker.
more from same ()
Slackware Founder announces retirement!!!

In a press statement today Founder and sole developer of the Slackware Linux operating system "Patrick Volkerding", announced his retirement. "Volkerding" states that the next release of Slackware (codenamed "Porch swing") will in fact be the last. Unfortunately the highly anticipated Linux 2.6 kernel based release, previously codenamed "Terrapin station" has been cancelled. When we asked "Patrick" why he was giving up he replied:

In these days of flashy installers and dependancy checking, nobody seems to want a simple reliable system that just works..." "I Need A Miracle!" or perhaps some "Young Blood" to take over this "Masterpiece" but I still feel "She Belongs To Me". "Even so" "Me & My Uncle" will be "Playin' In The Band"...

Yes, it seems that "Volkerding" is taking up a career in music, and is about to start touring with a band called "Banjo Bob and the X-men". Apparently this is a 6 piece banjo band that wear spandex pyjamas and do Greatful Dead covers.

Meanwhile the future of Slackware may be left out in "The Cold Rain And Snow".
